Conditions
Back pain
Back pain is the most common complaint in the Netherlands and one of the leading causes of absenteeism. From acute lumbago to chronic herniated disc complaints — at Fysio Willemspark in Amsterdam we treat the cause and work together towards lasting recovery.
Do you recognize this?
Low back pain that limits you daily
Radiating pain to the buttock or leg (sciatica)
Stiffness when getting out of bed or a chair
Muscle spasms or a sudden 'twinge' in the back
Difficulty bending, lifting, or twisting
Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting or standing
Possible causes
Back complaints have many causes. A thorough history and physical examination form the basis for an effective treatment plan.
Herniated disc (HNP)
A herniated nucleus pulposus occurs when the core of an intervertebral disc bulges and puts pressure on a nerve root. This often causes radiating pain in the leg, tingling, or loss of strength.
Muscle tension and strains
Acute or chronic overloading of the back muscles leads to muscle tension, stiffness, and pain. An incorrect movement or heavy lifting can cause a sudden strain.
Facet joint irritation
The small joints at the back of the spine (facet joints) can become irritated from overuse or wear. This causes local back pain that worsens when bending backward.
SI joint dysfunction
The sacroiliac joint connects the spine to the pelvis. Dysfunction of this joint causes pain in the lower back and buttock, often on one side. It frequently occurs after pregnancy.
Spinal stenosis
Narrowing of the spinal canal due to wear can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. This causes pain, tingling, and weakness in the legs, especially when walking.
Posture-related complaints
Prolonged sitting, poor work posture, or insufficient exercise puts one-sided stress on the back. This gradually leads to stiffness, muscle imbalance, and chronic back pain.
Our approach
- 1
Testing
Through various tests, we map out the reason you are experiencing back pain. Often there is more than one cause.
- 2
Solving
Based on the test results, we identify where the solution lies. By treating your body, you immediately feel an improvement in your pain complaint(s).
- 3
Follow-up
By performing the same tests again, you immediately experience that you have more strength and/or range of motion. Often within a single treatment.
