Leg pain
Leg complaints are common in athletes and active people, but also in people who stand or walk a lot for their work. From hamstring injuries to shin splints — at Fysio Willemspark in Amsterdam we guide you from diagnosis to full return to your sport and daily activities.
Do you recognize this?
Pain in the upper or lower leg during movement
Hamstring complaints when sprinting or bending
Calf cramps or tight calves after exertion
Pain along the shinbone (shin splints)
Radiating pain from the back to the leg
Muscle tear or sudden stab during sports
Possible causes
Leg complaints range from acute sports injuries to chronic overuse. An accurate diagnosis determines the right treatment.
Hamstring injury
A strain or (partial) tear of the hamstring is one of the most common sports injuries. It often occurs during sprinting, accelerating, or sudden movements and causes pain at the back of the thigh.
Quadriceps overload
Overloading of the front of the thigh from intensive sports, stair climbing, or repeated bending and extending. This leads to pain, stiffness, and sometimes reduced strength when extending the knee.
Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome)
Pain along the inside of the shinbone, common in runners and athletes who jump a lot. It is caused by overloading of the periosteum and muscles of the shinbone.
Compartment syndrome
Increased pressure in a muscle compartment of the lower leg during exertion. This causes a pressing, constricting feeling and pain that disappears after rest. Occurs during intensive sports.
Claudication (intermittent claudication)
Pain in the calves when walking due to reduced blood flow. After standing still briefly, the pain disappears again. This is caused by narrowing of the blood vessels and is more common at older ages.
Referred pain (radiating pain from the back)
Leg pain can also arise from a problem in the lower back, such as a herniated disc or nerve irritation. The pain radiates through the nerve pathways to the thigh, calf, or foot.
Our approach
- 1
Testing
Through various tests, we map out the reason you are experiencing leg complaints. Often there is more than one cause.
- 2
Solving
Based on the test results, we identify where the solution lies. By treating your body, you immediately feel an improvement in your leg.
- 3
Follow-up
By performing the same tests again, you immediately experience that you have more strength and load capacity. The goal is a full return to your activities.
