Possible causes
Foot complaints can have various causes, from tendonitis to nerve entrapment. A thorough examination forms the basis for targeted treatment.
Plantar fasciitis
Inflammation or irritation of the plantar fascia, the firm connective tissue sheet under your foot. It causes a stabbing pain under the heel, especially with the first steps after rest. Very common in runners.
Achilles tendon complaints
The Achilles tendon can become overloaded or inflamed from intensive sports, wrong footwear, or a sudden increase in activity. It causes pain and stiffness at the back of the heel.
Ankle sprain (distortion)
A sprain of the ankle damages the ankle ligaments. Insufficient rehabilitation after a sprain often leads to chronic instability, repeated sprains, and persistent pain.
Hallux valgus
An abnormal position of the big toe that points towards the other toes. This can cause pain, pressure points, and problems with footwear. More common in women and at older ages.
Morton's neuroma
Thickening of the nerve between the metatarsal bones, usually between the third and fourth toes. This causes a burning, tingling, or shooting sensation in the forefoot, especially in tight shoes.
Flat feet and overuse
A flattened foot arch can lead to overloading of muscles, tendons, and joints in the foot and lower leg. This causes pain when walking and standing and can affect the knee and hip.
